Challenge
A North American innovator in marine robotics approached us to develop a custom cable for their submersible underwater ROV (Remotely operated Vehicle). These vessels go into the ocean and collect data for 2-3 months. The data is then collected from the vessel to be analyzed. The cables used in these vessels must withstand the rough ocean climate and exposure to marine life. During ocean storms, the cable could be pulled into the ocean with several thousand pounds of force. Our engineering team needed to design a custom cable that was robust, high flex, and had data components.

Review
BizLink elocab’s in-house engineering team met with the customer to understand the application and the importance of the custom cable construction. For example, the final product had to fit within a confined envelope in the umbilical. It was also critical that the special elocab cable retain high tensile strength and resistance to extreme wrenching.

Solution
Our engineering team developed and tested a highly customized 30 AWG alloy-reinforced Cat6 cable. These features were vital in meeting the dimensional requirements, the robust construction, and the ability to collect data.

The marine vessel was successfully deployed in the field with the help of elocab’s cable and is still used, proving that our custom cables can outlive the ocean’s harsh environment.
